His parents were of the Xhosa tribe, and Mandela was given the name of Rolihlahla, which means “troublemaker.” Mandela’s father, Gadla Henry Mphakanyiswa, was a local chief and counselor to the paramount chief of the area. Gadla’s father had four wives, and Nelson Mandela was his first-born son.

Mandela attended primary school in Qunu, where he excelled in his studies. Mandela later attended school in Johannesburg, where he was given the name Nelson. He later went on to study at the prestigious University of Fort Hare, where he was one of only a handful of black students. Mandela’s university career was cut short when he was suspended for taking part in a student protest.

Mandela began his career as a lawyer, but he soon became involved in the anti-apartheid movement. In 1964, he was arrested and sentenced to life in prison for his role in the resistance against the white minority government.
