William Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564, in Stratford-upon-Avon. He was the son of John Shakespeare, a successful glover and alderman, and Mary Arden.

Shakespeare attended grammar school in Stratford and then studied at the University of Oxford. He began his career in theatre as an actor and later became a playwright. He wrote more than three dozen plays, including A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, and Hamlet. He also wrote several famous poems, including The Rape of Lucrece and The Sonnets.

William Shakespeare was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world’s pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England’s national poet and the “Bard of Avon“. His extant works, including collaborations, consist of approximately 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses, some of the uncertain authorship.

William Shakespeare died on April 23, 1616. After a long illness, he died at the age of 52 and was buried in Stratford-upon-Avon. The cause of his death is unknown, but it is speculated that he contracted either typhoid or malaria.
