George Orwell was born on June 25, 1903, in Motihari, British India. His father was a British civil servant, and his mother was from a wealthy landowning family. When Orwell was four years old, his family moved to England, where he attended a series of boarding schools.  He grew up in Henley-on-Thames, England.

Orwell attended Eton College and then joined the Indian Imperial Police in Burma, which was then a British colony. He resigned from the force after contracting tuberculosis and returned to England. There, he began his career as a writer. After resigning from the force, he moved to Paris, where he wrote Down and Out in Paris and London (1933), a firsthand account of poverty in the two cities. In 1936 he went to Spain to report on the Spanish Civil War, and in 1937 he was wounded by a bullet in the throat.

George Orwell returned to England in 1938 and wrote The Road to Wigan Pier, a study of poverty in the industrial north. He then joined the British Army and served in World War II. After being discharged from the army, he became a journalist and critic for the New York Times, Time magazine, and The Observer.
